- One offer per flyer. A6 has room for one idea, not your whole price list.
- Make the headline readable at arm's length. If you have to squint at it on screen at 100%, it's too small.
- Keep text at least 5 mm inside the edge and add 3 mm bleed all round.
- Make QR codes at least 2 cm across and test the link before it goes to print.
- Add a code or a short web address so you can tell which suburb each response came from.
- Send a CMYK PDF with images at 300 dpi. Screen colours (RGB) shift when printed.
A6 Flyers and A4 Letters for Local Businesses
Most of the local businesses we print for don't need anything fancy. They need their name and a good offer in every letterbox within a few kilometres of the shop, at a cost that lets them do it again next month. For that job an A6 flyer is hard to beat. Sometimes an A4 letter is better. Both are much cheaper than a glossy brochure or a catalogue.
Why A6 is the best value for a local business
A6 is 105 x 148 mm, a quarter of an A4 sheet. Four of them come off every A4 on the press, so the paper and print cost per flyer is a fraction of a bigger format. It's light and flat, so walkers can carry a lot more of them, and getting it into letterboxes is much cheaper too.
That saving is what lets a plumber or a café drop the same streets every month instead of once a year. People rarely ring the first time they see you. They ring the third or fourth time, when the tap is actually leaking.
A6 goes in the letterbox flat. Nothing gets folded, so the front is the first thing people see when they pull out the mail. And it's small enough to keep. It ends up on the fridge or in the kitchen drawer, which is where you want your phone number.
Who we print A6 for
Tradies
Plumbers, sparkies, builders, painters, roofers, pest control. Big phone number, licence number, the suburbs you cover and one reason to call this month. On 350gsm card it doubles as a fridge card.
Cafés and restaurants
The menu on the back, an opening offer or a pickup deal on the front. Gloss makes food photos look right. Put an expiry date on any voucher or it'll turn up years later.
Gyms and studios
Open days or a free first class. Keep it to one offer and a QR code to book.
Real estate agents
Just sold cards and appraisal offers. Agents often split a drop into two versions so they can see which one gets the calls.
Local shops, schools and clinics
Enrolment days at a school, or a new physio joining the practice down the road. These often work better as an A4 letter, because there's more to explain.
A6 flyer or A4 letter?
Both are cheap to print and deliver compared with anything glossy and folded. The choice comes down to how much you need to say.
| A6 flyer | A4 letter | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 105 x 148 mm | 210 x 297 mm, delivered flat or folded to DL (99 x 210 mm) |
| Room for | One offer and a phone number | A few paragraphs and a signature |
| How it reads | An ad you can take in at a glance | A personal note from a local business |
| Best stock | 150 to 350gsm, gloss or matt | Plain or lightly coated paper, like a real letter |
| Pick it for | Repeat drops, menus, vouchers, fridge cards | Introductions, price changes, new services, school and clinic news |
Pick A6 when the message fits on a postcard and you want to be in the same letterboxes again and again. Pick an A4 letter when people need a reason to trust you first. A builder introducing himself to a street before a knock-down rebuild next door. A dental clinic telling patients about a new practitioner. A letter gets read at the kitchen table, often right to the end, because it looks like it was written by a person.
LetterboxPush delivers A4 letters flat or folded to DL, whichever suits the job. Folded to DL, a letter also fits Australia Post's Small size for unaddressed mail. Choose "Letter" in the quote form if that's the way you want to go.
Getting it into letterboxes
We print here in Sydney and hand the flyers straight to LetterboxPush letterbox distribution, so there's no freight and no waiting on a truck from interstate. Why we print locally in Sydney explains the rest.
A6 also sits inside Australia Post's Small size for unaddressed mail, which runs from 88 x 138 mm to 130 x 240 mm. So the same flyer can go out by walker to the houses and through Australia Post into the locked apartment blocks that walkers can't get into. If you sell online as well, the same A6 fits in a parcel. See our distribution options.
Paper and finishes
| Stock | How it feels | Where we'd use it |
|---|---|---|
| 115gsm gloss or matt | Thin, like a good catalogue page | Very large runs where every gram counts |
| 150gsm gloss or matt | A proper flyer | The standard letterbox drop |
| 250gsm | Light card | Flyers you want people to keep |
| 300 to 350gsm | Stiff card, postcard feel | Vouchers, menus, fridge cards |
Gloss makes photos of food and houses pop. Matt cuts the glare and is easier to write on, so it suits vouchers people fill in. On the heavier card we can add a gloss or matt celloglaze, a thin laminate that stops the corners going soft in a damp letterbox. FSC certified and 100% recycled stocks are available if that matters to your customers.
One side or two
Print both sides. A blank back is wasted space on something people turn over anyway. Put the offer on the front and the detail on the back: a map, opening hours, the menu, the fine print on the voucher. Single sided only makes sense for something that gets stuck to a wall.
Quantities
We print A6 runs from 500 up to 500,000. Smaller runs go on digital presses and bigger ones on offset, and we choose whichever gives the better result at your quantity. If you're running a split test with LetterboxPush, we can print two designs in one job so each half of the drop gets its own version.
Design tips for A6
No artwork yet? Our design team sets up A6 flyers and A4 letters for local businesses all the time.
Typical example jobs
These are typical examples of local work, not named clients.
An electrician in Penrith wants to be the first number people find when a power point stops working. Double sided A6 on 350gsm matt, phone number and licence number large on the front. LetterboxPush drops it on the same streets every couple of months, and the file gets reprinted unchanged.
A café opening in Marrickville needs the neighbours to know it exists. A6 on 350gsm gloss with a free coffee voucher on the back, dropped within walking distance of the door in the week before opening.
A real estate agent in Maroubra has just sold in a quiet street. An A4 letter goes to the neighbours first, signed by the agent, explaining the result and offering an appraisal. A month later an A6 with the agent's photo and number follows it into the same letterboxes.
A gym in Castle Hill runs an open day. Two A6 designs printed in one job, one leading with a free week and one with a class timetable, split by street so the owner can see which one brought people through the door.
Frequently asked questions
What size is an A6 flyer?
105 x 148 mm. That's a quarter of an A4 sheet, about the size of a postcard.
Why are A6 flyers good value for local businesses?
Four A6 flyers come out of every A4 sheet, so they're much cheaper to print than bigger formats. They're light and go in flat, so they're much cheaper to deliver too. That leaves budget to drop the same streets more than once.
Should I send an A6 flyer or an A4 letter?
A6 if the message is one offer and a phone number. An A4 letter if you need to explain something or introduce yourself, because it has room for a few paragraphs and reads like a personal note. LetterboxPush delivers letters flat or folded to DL.
What paper weight is best for A6 letterbox flyers?
150gsm is the minimum we'd suggest for a letterbox drop. If you want people to keep the flyer, go for 250gsm or more. Vouchers and fridge cards work best on 300 or 350gsm.
Can A6 flyers go out through Australia Post unaddressed mail?
Yes. A6 is inside Australia Post's Small size for unaddressed mail (minimum 88 x 138 mm, maximum 130 x 240 mm), so it can reach secure apartment blocks that walkers can't get into. An A4 letter folded to DL fits as well.
How many A6 flyers do I need for a letterbox drop?
One per letterbox in the area you're targeting, plus a small allowance for spoils. Tell us the suburbs and LetterboxPush can work out the count for you.
